His unique style of singing and banjo playing combined elements of Appalachian folk music and African-American blues. A self-taught musician, Dock recorded about eights sides of music between 1927 and 1929. The Great Depression and domestic issues sidelined his musical career until he was “rediscovered” by Mike Seeger (The New Lost City Ramblers) and encouraged to perform at the American Folk Festival in Asheville, NC in 1963. This release contains several songs from that Festival including “Oh Death” and “Country Blues,” a song he had originally recorded in the 1920s.

The vinyl reissue of Legendary Singer and Banjo Player includes liner notes written by Mike Seeger and Ralph Rinzler, and is part of Folkways Records’ 70th anniversary celebration series, revisiting some of the most iconic and influential albums released on the record label.

101
Down South Blues Dock Boggs 02:11

102
Country Blues Dock Boggs 03:55

103
Pretty Polly Dock Boggs 02:56

104
Coal Creek March Dock Boggs 01:57

105
My Old Horse Died Dock Boggs 01:48

106
Wild Bill Jones Dock Boggs 02:14

107
Rowan County Crew Dock Boggs 06:15

108
New Prisoner's Song Dock Boggs 02:57

201
Oh Death Dock Boggs 03:22

202
Prodigal Son Dock Boggs 03:57

203
Mother's Advice Dock Boggs 03:43

204
Drunkard's Lone Child Dock Boggs 04:10

205
Bright Sunny South Dock Boggs 03:41
Audio Player
206
Mistreated Mama Blues Dock Boggs 01:55

Harvey Logan Dock Boggs 03:33
