However, he hardly played an instrument more dazzling in it's impact and variety than the organ which was installed at the Sydney Opera House. Completed in May 1979 at a cost of $1.2 million, the organ has come to be regarded as one of the finest such instruments in the southern hemisphere. Among the world's largest mechanical-action organs, it was built by an Australian, Ronald Sharpe and, during the final phase of construction, the Austrian organ-building firm of Gregor Hradetzky. Both the instrument and Hurford's rhythmically animated playing are justly immortalized by this album of popular organ classics. It begins with the toccata and fugue which was almost certainly not written for organ and probably not composed by Bach, but is destined to be associated with both in the public imagination. Likewise the Adagio that is no more or less than Giazotto's reworking and Romantic elaboration of a slender theme 'by' Albinoni. Whoever it was by, every piece on this compendious introduction to organ literature is richly enjoyable, and Hurford duly enjoys all the colors of the Sydney organ by, almost literally, pulling out all the stops during the course of the album. This historic event has slightly overshadowed other Ballets Russes commissions, such as Ravel’s ‘Daphnis et Chloé’ and Debussy’s ‘Jeux’ which were first performed under this French conductor who was born in Paris in 1875 and died as an American citizen in 1964. Record enthusiasts with long memories will recall various works by these two composers recorded by Monteux, particularly with the London Symphony Orchestra with whom, when well into his eighties, he had recently signed a renewable 25-year contract!\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eBut to categorise Monteux as a specialist in French music would be unfair. It was a label he himself derided, for his repertory encompassed the central German\/Austrian nineteenth-century repertoire and also recorded – with the Vienna Philharmonic and the London Symphony Orchestra – a highly sought-after cycle of the Beethoven symphonies.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eHis interpretation of Schubert’s ‘Unfinished’ (recorded in 1963 for Philips) is very romantically-centred, the extremely leisurely tempi for the two movements creating something of a timeless quality. As John Steane memorably put it in Gramophone, ‘it was as though she wore her own spotlight’.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eBorn in the Swabian town of Köngetried in 1919, Seefried was ‘discovered’, aged twenty, by Herbert von Karajan in Aachen, where she made her operatic debut as the Priestess in ‘Aida’. In 1943, she sang Eva in ‘Die Meistersinger’ for the Wiener Staatsoper, initiating an association that lasted until 1976. It was in Strauss and Mozart that Seefried was most admired.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eIssued over eleven single-disc volumes, Deutsche Grammophon\/Eloquence pays tribute to Irmgard Seefried, bringing back to circulation several recordings that have never previously been issued on CD. The music ranges through opera and oratorio, with an especially generous offering of art song from a range of composers, including Schubert, Schumann, Wolf, Hindemith and Egk. The notes for the series have been written by that leading connoisseur of the voice, Richard Wigmore.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eVolume 2 showcases Seefried in further operatic roles including such rarities as Lortzing’s ‘Der Wildschütz’ and Thomas’ ‘Mignon’ in which Seefried performed the mezzo role of the waif, Mignon, on stage, in German translation (then the norm in German opera houses) and recorded two of her arias. With her viola-like warmth of tone and dramatic immediacy, Seefried was Jochum’s unhesitating choice as the heroine Agathe in ‘Der Freischütz’. Octavian – which she often played opposite Schwarzkopf’s Sophie or Marschallin – became another signature role and the disc presents nearly 40 minutes of music from ‘Der Rosenkavalier’ in the 1958 Dresden recording conducted by Karl Böhm.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cimg src=\"https:\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0067\/4660\/3571\/files\/REVIEWS_CS_WORLD_7ad42b8b-2188-414f-9c17-0e66da4d836d_480x480.png?v=1595264361\" alt=\"\"\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cem\u003e‘[Her Octavian] was so charismatic that when she was on stage it could be difficult to look elsewhere for a moment unless … the Baron Ochs was Kurt Böhme. Of course, he spent seven years as conductor with the famous Ballets Russes during a particularly glorious period for the company. Formed in 1907 by Serge Diaghilev, the Ballets Russes brought a breath of fresh air to artistic creativity at the beginning of the twentieth century and had a decisive influence on the tastes and customs of the countries through which the company travelled. Under the leadership of the cultivated and somewhat capricious Diaghilev, the Ballets Russes went on to discover and encourage new choreographers (Fokine, Nijinsky, Massine, Balanchine, Lifar) who made a lasting impact on the history of modern dance while at the same time putting its faith in new creative artists, dancers and composers (Stravinsky, Ravel, Poulenc, Milhaud), writers (Cocteau) and painters (Bakst, Larionov, Braque, Picasso, de Chirico, Delaunay, Matisse, Laurencin and many others).\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eNumerous conductors worked with the Ballets Russes and while some have been forgotten, others are still very much remembered – such as Pierre Monteux (who gave the first performance of ‘The Rite of Spring’, among other works) and particularly Ansermet who, from 1916 to 1923, was in the company’s front line, conducting the first performances of such famous ballets as Satie’s ‘Parade’, Falla’s ‘Three-Cornered Hat’, Stravinsky’s ‘Song of the Nightingale’, ‘Pulcinella’, ‘Renard’ and ‘Les Noces’ and Prokofiev’s ‘Chout’.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eBut Ansermet knew and loved Russian music quite apart from the Ballets Russes. The Europe that was pre-World War I had a strong attachment to this music. Glinka’s overture to ‘Ruslan and Lyudmila’, Rimsky-Korsakov’s ‘Scheherazade’, ‘Golden Cockerel’ and’ Antar’, Mussorgsky’s ‘A Night on the Bare Mountain’, and Borodin’s ‘In the Steppes of Central Asia’, ‘Polovtsian Dances’ and Second Symphony were some of the regulars at the Sunday concerts of the great European orchestral associations. It was Ravel, a devotee of recent Russian music who proposed the first movement of Borodin’s Second Symphony as the rallying cry of the ‘Société des Apaches’, a French artistic group formed in 1900, principally of musicians and writers. Ravel dedicated each of the pieces in his ‘Miroirs’ for piano to a member of the Apaches. It should not be forgotten, too, how much of Mussorgsky’s ‘Boris Godunov’ rubbed off on Debussy’s ‘Pelléas et Mélisande’ or that the composer had, as a young man, been the piano-teacher of the children of Tchaikovsky’s patroness, Nadezhda von Meck.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eRussian music consequently held no mysteries for Ansermet, and with his long black beard, he was even taken for a Russian on occasion. The conductor loved to tell the tale of how, after a performance by the Ballets Russes in Madrid in the presence of Alfonso XIII, the King had said to him, ‘So obviously, with your beard, you are a complete Muscovite!’ and Ansermet replied, ‘No, Your Majesty, I’m Swiss!’. The King proceeded to slap his thighs with amusement that a Swiss was conducting the Russian ballet.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eRussian repertoire accounts for a large part of Ansermet’s discography, starting in New York in 1916 with extracts from works by Rimsky-Korsakov (‘Scheherazade’ and ‘The Snow Maiden’), Nikolai Tcherepnin (‘Le Pavillon d’Armide’) and ending in 1968 with the sumptuous recording with the New Philharmonia Orchestra of the complete ‘Firebird’ ballet by Stravinsky, in the original 1910 version. In between, Ansermet made many recordings of Russian repertoire, including Tchaikovsky’s three great ballets, the ‘Pathétique’ Symphony and other works. Other Russian composers included Borodin, Rimsky-Korsakov, Balakirev, Glazunov, Liadov, Rachmaninov, Prokofiev and, in first place of course, Stravinsky; Ansermet remains one of the major interpreters of his music. It is a source of joy but also, at times, confusion that the same works were recorded several times, as recording technology developed. Indeed, this recording of the Fourth Symphony of Tchaikovsky from February 1956 was so fleet that even the original LP had room for a filler - Smetana`s Vltava - in the days when 40 minutes was considered a good-length LP (this filler has now been reissued in a complementary release on Eloquence, `Dorati in Holland`, 482 5659). The present, newly remastered reissue on Eloquence is rather more generous, and replaces the Smetana with Dorati`s very first Philips recording made in September 1952, of the Pictures at an Exhibition by Mussorgsky in Ravel`s unsurpassed orchestration - made just days after his debut with the orchestra in concert. It went on to win an Edison Award.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eEven with Willem Mengelberg`s electrifying and unpredictable interpretations fresh in their collective memory, the Dutch critics were most taken with Dorati`s work: according to one reviewer of the Tchaikovsky, `Antal Dorati had a superb orchestra all to himself and he enjoyed it. For bringing back songs from obscurity alone, this is a worthy CD. But it also recalls obscure composers like Pinsuti, Klosé, Beale, Galkin, Walmisley and Callcott and an obscure instrument – the ophicleide (the instrument Mendelssohn wanted for Bottom’s braying in the Midsummer Night’s Dream overture). The performances are idiomatic and charming, the programming a joy. Critics wrote that \"the public expected a well-rehearsed puppet, and discovered a true musician.\" He was dubbed a prodigy among prodigies. What was most striking in the plethora of praise that followed his appearances throughout Europe were phrases rarely associated with child performers: \"stupefying authority,\" \"remarkable elegance,\" \"sensitivity\", \"authority,\" \"purity of style.\" Makanowitzky made his New York debut in 1937.\u003cbr\u003eIn 1942, still a Swedish subject, Makanowitzky volunteered, to the consternation of his managers and Galamian, to fight for America in World War II.
