The absence of both Gloria and Credo settings (these texts being too long to be easily suited to the form of a canon) probably explains the neglect, yet the four movements of this work show all the hallmarks of Brahms’s compositional mastery and deft handling of choral effect that are well known from his many motets, six of which, including the sublime Op 30 Geistliches Lied, are also recorded here.

Concluding this new disc from Westminster Cathedral is the extraordinary double-choir Mass in E flat by Joseph Rheinberger, Leichtenstein’s most famous organ prodigy. This is music born of the polychoral Venitian tradition of Gabrieli and Monteverdi, nurtured on the harmonic milk of Bach and Mendelssohn, and finally offered up to the world as a miniature choral symphony that is uniquely Rheinberger’s.

The Choir of Westminster Cathedral, under Master of Music Martin Baker, takes on the challenges presented by these varied works with panache to create a disc that is sure to appeal.

Missa canonica[12'07] - Johannes Brahms (1833-1897)

Matthew Martin (organ)

1 Kyrie[3'50]

2 Sanctus[2'36]

3 Benedictus[1'53]

4 Agnus Dei[3'48]

Two Motets Op 29[10'58] - Johannes Brahms (1833-1897)

Matthew Martin (organ)

8 Ave Maria Op 12[3'56] - Johannes Brahms (1833-1897)

Matthew Martin (organ)

Two Motets Op 74[14'20] - Johannes Brahms (1833-1897)

9 No 2 Verse 1: O Heiland, reiss die Himmel auf[0'42]

10 No 2 Verse 2: O Gott ein Tau vom Himmel giess[0'46]

11 No 2 Verse 3: O Erd schlag aus, schlag aus o Erd[0'56]

12 No 2 Verse 4: Hie leiden wir die grösste Not[1'22]

13 No 2 Verse 5: Da wollen wir all danken dir[1'05]

14 No 1 Movement 1: Warum ist das Licht gegeben?[5'26]

15 No 1 Movement 2: Lasset uns unser Herz samt den Händen[0'56]

16 No 1 Movement 3: Siehe, wir preisen selig, die erduldet haben[1'59]

17 No 1 Movement 4: Mit Fried und Freud ich fahr dahin[1'08]

Mass for double choir in E flat 'Cantus Missae' Op 109[21'42] - Joseph Rheinberger (1839-1901)

18 Kyrie[3'18]

19 Gloria[3'14]

20 Credo[6'13]

21 Sanctus[1'50]

22 Benedictus[2'24]

23 Agnus Dei[4'43]

https://classicselectworld.com/en-de/products/brahms-missa-canonica-rheinberger-mass-for-double-choir-baker-westminster-cathedral-choir
