R&B, R&R, Doo Wop / Vocal, Soul, Pop and even comedy (did you hear Yakety Yak?) The Coasters covered all the bases during their musical heyday in the 1950s and early 60s. Starting life as The Robins the band had been recording since 1949 and by 1953 they could be found in the more than capable hands of legendary songwriters Leiber & Stoller. By 1955 they had signed to Atlantic when their hit Smokey Joe’s Café became too big for their small independent label Spark to handle. Fortunately for the guys Leiber & Stoller remained on hand to supply them with pretty much all their hits through the 1950s and beyond. In 1987 they were inducted into the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame but by then the line up had changed so many times it was hard to keep up! AVID here gives a shout out to some of the major players to grace the stage as the one and only Coasters. Lead tenor and sole surviving member (until his death in 2011) who also maintained the rights to the name, Carl Gardner. Bobby Nunn who together with Gardner formed the original band. Along the way would come Billy Guy, Leon Hughes and Adolph Jacobs which would take us up to 1959. Others involved later included Will Jones, Obie Jessie, Cornell Gunter and Earl “Speedo” Carroll. Yakety Yak to one and all! As with all AVID releases, we hope you enjoy this classic set and check out our extensive catalogue for more great music across r&b, pop, country, rock n roll, rockabilly, jazz, blues and many other musical genres.
