Tudor Music from Hampton Court Palace - I Fagiolini, The Forbury Consort, Steven Player

The secular music of the Tudor court, with its frequent references to rural life, coy maidens, beautiful roses and characters called Robyn easily conjures up the ‘Olde Englande’ of
the Romantic novelists. But in fact the court of Henry VIII had a political and cultural sophistication and an international outlook which give the lie to this Arcadian vision. After all, even references to greenery and roses had a political function; green and white were Henry’s colours, and his birth as the union of the red and white roses of the houses of Lancaster and York made flattering puns more than acceptable in courtly songs. The music
of the court mirrored the international nature of its business and interests; visits from foreign musicians such as Capirola (from Brescia) were common, and the Flemish lutenist and composer Philip van Wilder took up permanent residence (three of his French-style chansons appear here).
