AVID Roots continues with its Five Classic Albums series with a re-mastered 2 CD release from The Kingston Trio, complete with original artwork, liner notes and personnel details.
“The Kingston Trio”; “Here We Go Again”; “String Along”; “Close Up” and “New Frontier”.
Dave Guard, Nick Reynolds, Bob Shane and (later in 1961 due to “musical and financial differences”, when Guard left the group) John Stewart, The Kingston Trio were the most popular and best selling group of the folk revival era in the US in the late 1950s and early 1960s. In fact having won a Grammy award for Best Country & Western Performance for the single “Tom Dooley” taken from their first album “The Kingston Trio” at a time when no Folk Awards even existed, they were instrumental in a Folk Award being instigated by the Academy the following year, in which they of course won! The surprisingly huge success of “Tom Dooley”, largely due to strong support on radio led to a huge spike in sales for their initially slow selling debut LP which remained on the charts for four years and subsequently the Trio went on to become one of most popular and most influential groups of the era laying the foundation for the folk movement of the 1960s from Bob Dylan to Joan Baez, The Byrds and beyond. Here’s an amazing fact, by 1961 their sales made up 15% of Capitol Records total sales having sold 8 million records and earning Capitol over $25 million. Who said Folk music would never sell?
