In the past century, the church of La Madeleine was the theatre of secular as well as religious ceremonies: grand weddings, state funerals, benedictions, etc. Saint-Saëns put his consummate musicality at the service of such joyful or sad occasions, but always in perfect good taste and in the vocal and instrumental tradition of his time: solo voices, choir, organ, harp and even horn.
