In The Rite of Spring Stravinsky called for one of the largest orchestras ever assembled – a hallmark of the Romantic era. But the music itself is savagely anti-Romantic. It heralded the end of an era, and seemed to foreshadow the outbreak of World War I. His next theatre piece, The Soldier’s Tale, coincided with the end of the war, and, symbolically calls for drastically reduced forces. Quirky, catchy and disturbing, it was one of the first important works to reflect the influence of jazz and makes for compulsive listening – especially when, as here, it is heard in its entirety.
