George Templeton Strong was an American Romantic who lived in Switzerland. His music was championed by giants like Ansermet, Szigeti, Iturbi, and Toscanini. A colleague and friend of MacDowell’s, Strong lived to 92, composing grand musical canvasses and painting evocative watercolours.

His magnum opus is the Symphony No. 2 (“Sintram”), a powerful, brilliantly scored orchestral masterpiece. It carries a symbolic message that mankind can overcome the evils of private and public abuse of power through struggle. The Chorale on a Theme by Hans Leo Hassler is a work of profound emotion and serene beauty. This recording is the first in a series devoted to the complete orchestral works by this great American master.
