A composer of diverse talents, from quartets to oratorios and light music, Bonnal left us two masterpieces for organ that bridge the gap, within the rich harvest of the interwar period, between the works of his teacher Tournemire and his friend Duruflé. While the Paysages euskariens (Basque Landscapes) vividly capture the colors of the Basque Country where he spent much of his life, the Symphonie sur "Media vita" (Symphony on "Media Vita") opens the doors to his anxious yet hopeful soul, in the gentle embrace of Gregorian chants: "Holy and merciful Savior, do not deliver us to bitter death!"
