A central aspect of Protestant piety at the time of Johann Sebastian Bach was the inner contrition of the sinner regarding his misconduct, and his supplications to God in the hope of forgiveness. This theme, along with intimations of sadness and joy, mark this most current release of Marcel Ponseele and Il Gardellinos five-part Bach cantata cycle on Passacaille, in which they provide a further three of the masters cantatas, with a significant contribution this time around from countertenor Damien Guillon.
