Rheinberger: Six Pieces, Op. 150 / Suite for Violin and Organ - Most, Line; Ziener, Marie

Although Rheinberger was successful during his lifetime in a variety of genres, he is remembered today for his demanding organ works, now considered among the major contributions to organ literature of the nineteenth century. The compositions on this recording are for the unusual combination of violin and organ. The Six Pieces, Op. 150, range from the majestic Overture, a typical example of Rheinberger’s synthesis of baroque and romantic styles, to the melancholic Elegie, but without any unifying theme. By contrast, the Suite, Op. 166 is made up of a logical series of movements and key progressions, beginning with a Baroque-influenced Prelude and culminating in a virtuosic Moto perpetuo which makes great demands on the violinist’s stamina.
