The Cluytens Box - A Collection of His Best Recordings (10 CDs)

Legendary French conductor André Cluytens is regarded as an outstanding interpreter of the German classics, the Wagner repertoire, French music of the 19th and 20th centuries and Russian symphonic works. The recordings included in this 10CD set come from the 1950s, and feature Cluytens working with pianists of the calibre of Clara Haskil, Robert Casadesus, Emil Gilels and Dimitri Shostakovich, as well as opera stars like Victoria de los Angeles, Nicolai Gedda and Boris Christoff.

Amongst the leading orchestras that André Cluytens is heard conducting on this set are the Berlin and the Vienna Philharmonics as well as the top orchestras of his native France, the Orchestre National de la Radiodiffusion Française, the Orchestre du Théatre National de l'Opéra de Paris and the Orchestre de la Société des Concerts du Conservatoire.The recordings of Rachmaninov's 3rd and Shostakovich's 2nd piano concertos presented here count among the best ever made. The collection also includes orchestral passages from Wagner's "Ring", as well as performances of Mozart's Piano Concerto No.24, Beethoven's "Pastoral" Symphony, and excerpts from Gounod's "Faust".
