10CD box set that brings together twenty original albums of West Coast jazz, recorded between 1953 and 1960 in one handy box set. Featuring a mixture of classic and rare LPs by stars such as Chet Baker, Stan Getz, Gerry Mulligan, Art Pepper, Shorty Rogers, Chico Hamilton, Jimmy Giuffre, Teddy Edwards and others.

Hot climate, cool sounds! Los Angeles was the epicenter of a seductively swinging form of Bebop in the early 1950s, which shook all of California and came to be known as “West Coast Jazz”. Iconic musicians like Chet Baker, Stan Getz or Gerry Mulligan helped to shape this decidedly mellower (and often more „arranged“) style, certainly compared to the Hard Bop coming from the East Coast around the same time. Some of the greatest (and some of the rarest) original albums by the giants of West Coast Jazz are presented in this lovingly assembled (and remastered) 10 CD collection. Starting with classics by “Chet Baker & Crew” or Stan Getz’ aptly titled album “West Coast Jazz”, these twenty albums cover a wide range of moods and styles – from the swinging string-arrangements on drummer Chico Hamilton’s “With Strings Attached” via supreme blowing sessions like Harold Land’s “West Coast Blues” or Teddy Edwards’s “Sunset Eyes” on to bigband-blasts by Marty Paich (his rare “I Get A Boot Out Of You”) or the intense “Collaboration” of trumpeter Shorty Rogers and pianist André Previn. The fact that “West Coast Jazz” was a much more “integrated” affair in these still rather “segregated” Fifties is proven by some of the greatest recordings by the pianists Carl Perkins and Gerald Wiggins, or bassist Red Callender. A unique collection, that works like an audio-trip into California’s musical heritage.
